A great internet business is defined by any number of things---not just money. While money is the main reason businesses are created in the first place, it's not everything. Financial security, for instance, plays an important role as well. Just because an internet business is worth a lot of money doesn't mean that it's great. The worth of the money and the security defines the success or failure of a business.

Longevity and the impact a company brings to the world wide web also both define a great internet business. There are thousands of web based businesses these days, and while many of them are successful on some level or another, only few of them can be called "great". This is because there's only so much room at the top, and only the best of the best can ever make it to number one.

If you'd like to have a great internet business, then you're going to have to work hard. There will always be competition out there, and you'll need to work hard in order to surpass everyone else. Not only that, but you'll have to work hard to STAY ahead as well. Persistence is the key, and you're going to need a lot of it if you want to have a great internet business. But believe me, the rewards are well worth it.

To begin with, learn about demographics and targeted buyers, advertise to them, follow up on all leads, sell, and do follow ups. Know the market, know who to market to, and make sure you do so successfully. As for demographics, you need to know WHO to advertise to before you spend the first dollar on ads. For example, if you're selling leather handbags, you should advertise to women who are interested, rather than, say, animal rights activists. If you're selling dog food, you wouldn't advertise to cat owners, right?

Obviously, to advertise to targeted buyers means to narrow down your marketing and promotional strategies. You need to do this for the time being if you want to eventually have a great internet business. Since you more than likely don't have millions of dollars to blast your ad all over the world like McDonald's or Pepsi, your best option is to advertise to only the people who will be interested. In time, they will tell their friends about your company, making it grow through word of mouth.

So your success will grow and the cash will be pouring in. Will you then have a great internet business? No. You'll need to maintain that success and keep your customers. Keep in touch with them, follow up, and continue advertising. The more happy you make them, the more referrals they'll send your way. Your customer list will increase more and more, which means you'll have more people to advertise to, which will play a big role in your great internet business.

Eventually, when so much word of mouth gets around about your internet business that you find it front page of Google for more than just a few keywords, you may begin calling it great. In order to ensure your great internet business STAY great, you'll need to keep on making your customers happy. You'll need keep track of all the trends and continuously establish yourself as an expert. In the end, a great internet business is defined by hard work, strong customer relations, integrity, longevity, and by having an overall positive presence on the web.
