A sitemap of a website is similar to the table of contents of a book. Sitemaps are important because it guides web surfers to the particular part of the website they have a point of interest in. With it they would save time following links and get right to the point instead.
Sitemaps are also where search engines look at if somebody is looking for a particular keyword or phrase. If you have a site map, you can most likely be searched.
Creating a sitemap, now with software technology surging in, is relatively easier than before. You need not be a programming guru to be one. All need is a notepad, a program editor, and some patience. Here’s how you do it:
Create the listing on a notepad.
It doesn’t necessarily have to be a notepad. Any word processing program will do. First off, make sure to type in all the parts and pieces of your website. Include all pages and all links you have. Create it as if you listing the contents of your book. Make a draft first. You’re sure no to miss something out this way.
Create a new page for your sitemap.
You can insert the sitemap on your website on one of its pages or you can create an entirely different page for it. Using your notepad, incorporate all tags necessary to it to make another webpage. Open up your website creator program and tag your sitemap using it. If you have created your website on your own, this will be easy for you.
Create a link for the sitemap.
You won’t be able to view the sitemap if you won’t put a link for it, of course. Create the link on the front page of your website so that visitors can view it right away and be directed appropriately.
Check your work.
It is important to validate the functionality of the links you created on the sitemap. Test each and every one in there and if you get an error, be sure to fix it accurately. Run through
every single page to make sure that all are accounted for.
Upload your work.
Place the sitemap now on your live browser and double check it. It should function as smoothly as the dry run. Error should be minimal at this stage since you already have verified it locally.
The steps provided herewith is the manual way of creating a sitemap. These days, if you search hard enough on the web, you will find online programs that will do all these work for you. All you have to do it type in the URL or the link of your website and they will create the sitemap with click of a button.
Of course that method is generic. All of you who have created their sitemap that way will have an end product that is all the same, plus there’s that possibility that something else will be inserted in there too. Then again, the process is less taxing and way, way simpler.
But if you want a more personalized output, and you are pretty good with computers and programming yourself, better make one of your own. And since you made your website anyway, creating sitemap is just like creating any other page on the website. Other than you’ll know for sure the links are accurate, you can organize the links the way you prefer it to be. Major parts of the site are emphasized compared to less significant. This is important especially if you are selling products or offering services online.
Sitemap is vital to a website. People search the web a lot for something. If your website has what that particular person is looking for, and your sitemap reports it, then you have a new customer looking at your items. Not only that, they will see some other things up for sale that they might be interested in as well.
Sitemaps, be it generated by a program automatically or you made it yourself, presents the same purpose. That is to lead your visitors to where they’re likely headed, and for you to be seen on the World Wide Web through search spiders. So with these, make sure your website has a sitemap of its own, lest make one.

I would like to know who wrote this "How to create a sitemap". Whoever you are, YOU need to do some double checking, like spacing your words, using correct English; including the correct wording. Also, as far as I know, the "front page" should be called the "INDEX" page of the website.

I agree. I am still a little confused on how the site map will draw in new customers other than the use of key words? any other advice on free marketing strategies? My site is www.mommytyme.org with a link directly to the store and email.

People generally have this notion that loosing weight through just diet pill will be easy, but that's not so. Diet pill works well if a person consumes low-fat diet and has a habit of working out regularly. Simply popping diet pill and waiting for miracle to happen within weeks or months will only give you pain. Loosing weight is slow process that requires time and commitment, but then you really feel proud about yourself when you see yourself in the mirror and say, "Is this me."
Consult your doctor before taking any diet pill and inform him about your entire medical history. A patient should strictly follow his/her doctor's advice for dose. There are many drugs that have negative impacts with Phentermine and it should not be consumed if you are suffering from certain diseases. There are many other weight loss drugs available to lose weight, but Phentermine is the most commonly prescribed medication for weight loss. http://phenterminehom e.com/weight_loss_tips.ht ml |

This is a very good article and usefull. However, i think that webmasters must have the sitemap in xml format - for the searchinh engines, and in a HTML format - for the visitors (xml should not be exposed to the visitors). This should look like the HTML page !

Be sure to check your 'site:yoursite.com' on Google after your sitemap has been visited, to see how many of your webpages have actually been indexed by Google. I have video training over how to do particularly important things at my site: http://www.website-marketing-solutions.com

Making a sitemap doesn't really take that long if you have a system. If you count your links, create your A HREF code and then copy and paste that code to match the number of links that you'll have, it cuts down on the amount of time. I'll never forget the first time I made a website. It took me four months!! all because I didn't have a system down. This article has some really great advice on efficiency - thanks for sharing with us!

Good information, but you've left out information on XML based Sitemaps. Using XML Sitemaps, you can tell the web crawlers/spider/bots when your pages each got modified so they can crawl them again, and give search listing priority (obviously, you want your main page to have top priority, and probably have some other pages that you don't care if they get listed or not...) My XML Sitemap is at http://www.computerslex.com/sitemap.xml if I've confused anyone on what I'm talking about...

It's a pretty straightforward description of how to make a rudimentary site map that will at least get the search engines to notice you and give your visitors another link to check out. not a lot of my visitors to http://www.ChronicPainHero.4t.com are looking at the sitemap. they are more interested in the free information proven to help ease chronic pains and the merchandise and products that can help tolerate pain flareups. Kinda hard to get them to use the sitemap but GOOGLE sure loves it on my site so I would say get one and update it for errors and content.

What is the difference between a HTML and XML sitemap? Google insists on a XML sitemap for indexing purposes but I don't read anything about these differences here in this article.
I created a HTML sitemap for http://www.freelift.com and for all the individual underlying country websites like freelift.de , freelift.fr etc. When I check the crawlability of the sitemaps most of the time I get an error back from webspiders or robots telling me they cannot crawl the stairlift, traplift, treppenlift, monte-escalier sitemaps on my website because it is not in xml. |

Don’t forget that there are 2 types of site maps. The HTML site map (the one you are talking about) and the XML Sitemap. HTML site map is the listing of the pages on your website that is useful for your visitors and search engines. XML Sitemap is strictly for the search engines to inform them on updates and new additions to your website. I spent some time searching for the website that would generate the XML Sitemap for me and web-site-map com seems to work just fine for my size of the website. If you need to learn more about site maps, visit Google at http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/topic.py?topic=8476

I read this article and agree with more kind of and my comment is Of course that method is generic. All of you who have created their sitemap that way will have an end product that is all the same, plus there’s that possibility that something else will be inserted in there too. Then again, the process is less taxing and way, but please make it more easy and simple process.

SEO solutions is SEO (Search Engine Optimization)is one of the most effective things you can do online, getting your web site optimized in such a way that the search engines will reward you by basically sending traffic your way.SEO is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via search results for targeted keywords. SEO is not really that simple, but the bottom line is, if your page is optimized both on page and off, you generally get higher natural search engine rankings, which leads to traffic for you

After learning how to build a blog on wordpress, I've had an opportunity to explore more and that included the site map. If you are using wordpress for your site, you can find "Google XML Sitemap" Plugin for wordpress on google, and once you downloaded it, you have a sitemap setting on your wordpress blog. It's actually much easier than doing it manually.
I hope this information helps for some people who are using wordpress for their site. |

I agree with Frontware International. Just go to http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/standalone-google-sitemap-generator.html for free site map of up to 500 pages. If you have a wordpress blog you can create a site map using one of the widgets, the one I have in mind now is XML Site Map.
If you have only a few pages which do not change over time then maybe you can do it manually as described. On the other hand if your website is dynamically generated with very many pages that need frequent updating, the task can be daunting or impossible. That's when to go for auto generated site maps. |

Rather generic and not really very helpful. There is no difference in identifying whether it is the html, txt or xml sitemap both of which are completely opposite. The html sitemap which is perhaps the one this article refers to is for the end user, whilst the xml and / or txt versions are Google's preference.
I have my own html within my root folder and it is listed on my index page, http://www.eskside.co.uk which works extremely well for my visitors. I don't rate this article at all, and strangely enough I could not post without rating it as excellent which it clearly isn't!! |

sitemap sitemap sitemap. Most websites unless its a very extensive directory have less then 10 pages. Honestly I have found a sitemap to be a waste of time unless you have 20 + pages with lots of links. A search engine will find al your pages unless it gets a link that locks it out of your site. check your links make sure you can use a back botton to get back to your site. If that works then you have no need to make a sitemap

Is there some additional advice concerning blogspot.com blogs who can't upload a self-made site map but depend on Google doing it via Webmastertool?
Cause on one thing I agree: Site maps are of great importance. Read books online free: http://freebooksread.blog spot.com/ |
