Which processor should I get?

I’ve been looking at several processors, and I’ve managed to narrow it down to 4. I’m just not sure about the number of cores that I need, so…

The processors I looked at:

AMD Athlon II X2 240 2.8GHz Dual-core

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103714

$50.99

AMD Athlon II X3 440 3.0GHz Triple-core

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103843

$74.99

AMD Athlon II X4 620 2.6GHz Quad-core

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103706

$89.00

AMD Phenom II X6 1055T 2.8GHz Six-core

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103851

$197.99

Just so you know, they’re all Socket AM3.

I’d be using my computer mainly for photo editing, HD video editing, MMOs, games like StarCraft 2, media viewing, office programs, and internet (social networking, email, news, etc).

Which processor do you think would be best, for the price? The more “future-proof” the processor is, the better. If I have to shell out $200 for the Phenom II X6, then okay, I will, but I’d prefer to spend less money.

if you have the money get the X6

but your computer will be fine still with a X4

if you get really lucky you can buy a X3 and try and unlock the 4th core but doesnt always work

i have the 1055t personally and its an amazing processor. if your doing hd video editing you shouldnt even be thinking of athlon processors you should be thinking between the 1055t the 965 or the 955 (all phenom 2) processors and decide depending on your budget.

also be aware for hex core you need a 800 series motherboard chipset

the way to find out is to look at the specifications for all the programs you will be using and see what you need for processor specs then match them up. you probably won’t need a superfast one.but it’s nice to have. what matters the most in a computer where you will run video intensive applications is the video card so i would check the spec on the programs for the video and get that card. where you will need a more expensive processor is if you will be running a lot of programs at one time. what they’re saying when they talk about cores is that you have the equivalent of say six processors in one processor. so if you could run 4 programs on a single core at the same time then you can run 24 programs on a six core and the higher the ghz the faster it is. also i don’t know if you know this but you can’t just put any processor in any motherboard if you haven’t done this you need to find out which processor can be used in your board. just because you have an amd board you can’t put any amd processor in it.

Hey you answered your own question…….future proof. The X6 is the way to go for your needs and get 8gb memory. You will be future proofed for many years to come.
