Hi, i justwant to know how the companies that provide Domain names ect, how they get the domain to start with and if there was a way for me to host myself a .com , .co.uk ect domain name without having to pay? …

to have a .com you will need to pay to have that domain providing your fuly qualified domain name hasnt been taken. uncommon domain names for example my website (not upgraded) ends with .webs.com are free
Usually companies paid and registered with their domain names with web hosting/registrar companies. This is required for the ICANN organisation. U can refer to the wiki source at below.
As for free domains, there are some web hosting companies provide that service. But the domain name will be like for example, http://www.microsoft.com/alvin or http://www.yahoo.alvin.com . It means u will definitely won’t have your own personalised domain name for free.

Steps
1. Go a webhosting company’s website like whois.com
2. Type in the name you want & Click search.
The web hosting co. will search if that name is already taken by someone or not.
If it is taken it will suggest you simmilier name with different extension like if you chose
http://www.rdsons.co.in and it is not available the result will give you options like http://www.rdsons.net.in
Now to your second answer the Domain name like .COM & .CO.UK can not be obtained without paying for it.
Although you can search for free domain names which will probably have a less facier extention like .byethost.com & your domain name will be http://www.yourname.byethost.com .So basically byethost is providing you a free domain name.
There are many free domain name provider you can search for it. They give you domain name for free provided you keep their ads on their website, or with some other limitations.
But I suggest by a domain name its like buying a pizza.. or even less. $9.88 for 1 year for a .COM!! I suggest don’t waste time in search for a free domain!
