How do I make a free downloadable ebook?

I want to make a e-book for people to download free from my website. How do I make it? Do I use programs like Microsoft Office Word and change it to a PDF file? How do I do this? How do I get the file to show on something like Adobe reader so no one can edit it? Please help.

says is “a step-by-step guide that covers the basics of creating and
optimizing Adobe® Portable Document Format (PDF) files so
that they can be viewed as electronic books (eBooks) using the
free Adobe® Acrobat eBook Reader™ 2.2 software.”
However, I believe you will need your document in PDF format already.
