Max said this on June 13, 2011 at 4:16 pm Okay, my FIRST piece of advice… Don’t use Dreamweaver to start out… Go to Tizag.com and read the “Beginner” tutorial and progress from there, but practice hand-coding your stuff in Notepad… When you get comfortable doing that, use hand-coding in Dreamweaver to save time… Don’t get dependant on the WYSIWYG part of it. (WYSIWYG = What You See Is What You Get editor, like you click “bold” and it wraps bold around stuff) … I took web design 7 years ago and have been hand-coding everything since then… I learned CSS with Tizag.com 3 months ago (btw, CSS is majorly helpful) AND if you have the entire CS4 Master Collection, I envy you so much it might make you head explode, lol… I’m saving up for that myself. Once able to do something in DW, you will end-up against a wall, not able to go any further. Since you would have spent so much time learning DW, you would not have ANY experience in coding. Dead. Sell your copy of DW. With the money you get: Buy Photoshop. Download Notepad++ (free): this will be your editor, and nothing else). Buy a domain name and rent a LAMP server (with Php and mysql, and NO windows) Should cost you less than 70$/year. Armed with Photoshop, learn how to make nice images. Armed with your new site, visit w3schools.com and start learning HTML. (1 week for the basics) Make a few static pages. Continue by learning javascript (add a few gadgets to your site, in javascript). (1 week for a few bits) Continue learning php (a few weeks for the basics) Continue learning mysql. (a week for the basics), Grab “free scripts” from the web, but NOT too complicated, and learn “by example”. A good source of simple scripts at http://www.web2coders.com (free). HTML is simple hyper text and is a computer based language that allows everything you see to be possible on a computer. XHTML 4.0 is the newer HTML that is not as difficult in writing complex formulas as html can be when creating web pages. I use XHTML 4.0 for simple pages, MYSQL Databases with PHP for community based sites. CS4 is great if you know what you are doing but if you don’t stick to the beautiful and simple notepad. But the most recommended and best web host so far is http://www.NetworkJuiceHosting.com ; Network Juice. They now offer plans starting around $0.99/mo for a great amount of diskspace plus everything else unlimited. Plus they’ve manage to keep up 99% Uptime. They have all features such as PHP5, java ,Cpanel , Fantastico ( allows you to auto install Blogging systems and CMS portals without wasting time) , Cron Job , Apache ,Unlimited Dadabase , ftp accounts and much more. Basically EVERYTHING! is supported. There are other affordable plans as well in NetworkJuiceHosting.com. Hostgator.com is also a great host , but there Uptime time is not so good. Also , customer service is very poor , Not to many features are supported. Google.com not so sure , But i know there’s lots of files they do not support , no Cpanel , and i don’t know how come , but they have been receiving downtimes lately in their host servers. yahoo , let me just say it’s the worst web host ever ,you can’t even host the amount of domains you want to host . Including FatCow.com. The downtime is way to much , and many files are un-compatible in fatcow for some reason. To buy a domain , the most recommended site is godaddy , but not for it’s hosting!! Not only XHTML and CSS but you will also find some great tuts for PHP, .Net, javascript and a lot more.
